Calling about a Rabbit

Mother rabbits leave their nest early in the morning and do not return all day until dark.   This is why they put their nest in the middle of your dog yard, in the middle of your garden or your yard.  The rabbit is letting the sun keep them warm while she is off.   If you have disturbed a nest by mowing, gardening or  if your dog disturbed the nest, here is what you need to do.

Put everything back in the nest.  If any were accidentally killed take them and  bury them, otherwise put them back and leave them alone.
Rabbits are one of those animals that by their own nature get scared, won't eat and are difficult to raise.

Keep your dogs away,  Garden around them or mow around them and in 21 days they will be gone.   If we are full and you call Animal Control they may be euthanized.    Give them 21 days......

Let us all help and show a little extra effort shows we care.  Leave them alone or put them back.

They all thank you.

Please remember we are 100% staffed by volunteers and run 100%  by donations.  We are not part of or receive any state or federal funding.  If you want to help us make a difference on Mother Earth you can give by pay pal, checks made to "Hoo" Haven and sent to PO Box 594.  All donations are appreciate whether it be paper towels, hamster food (eaten by rats, squirrels, etc.) but there are some things that only cash can purchase.  Such as extra food for the Raptors, medicine and more.  Please remember ALL donations are Tax Deductible as we are a 501(c) Organization.

Thank you for your understanding.

FAWNS   FAWNS    FAWNS

There is nothing cuter than Bambi and none of us wants to see them hurt or orphaned, but please listen carefully.

People often say they can walk right up to them, they do not run away.  Fawns have not seen humans, they do not know if they are good or bad and they have not gained their fear yet.  Remember fawns grow up to be large does or big bucks.  It is illegal to have them in your possession.

Does put their fawns everywhere, front yards, driveways (yes driveways), along the road, cemeteries and more.  Mothers will leave them for HOURS.  Some may not come back until 10 or 11 o'clock at night.  Resist the impulse to take them.  You make them orphans and leave their mother looking and calling for their babies.

If at 11pm at night or you actually see the mother hit and dead, only then, can you pick up the fawn and call immediately.   Even then I have had people call and say when the fawn starts to bleat a mother comes running.   Do NOT under any circumstances give them milk.  They require a lot of special care.

Please remember I am a nurse and the only one that returns calls.  Any baby if healthy will be fine for hours if kept warm and given the warm sugar solution: 1/2 cup warm water, one tablespoon of sugar and 1/8 teaspoon of salt:  Stir, and give carefully.

We appreciate that all of you love wildlife and want to help.

Director, “Hoo” Haven

Yes Summer is in full swing.

You have probably called "Hoo" Haven and have been directed to seek our web page for further assistance until you can bring the mammal out.

If you believe a baby is truly orphaned or an animal has an injury do NOT leave it on the ground. The only thing that will find it is maggots, flies and bugs and predators ( probably) cats).

1. Put the animal in a box or pet carrier with a towel.

2. Keep it warm Remember babies or animals with injuries need to be warmer than most.

3. Put it in the Bathroom or a quiet place where children or pets can not bother it.

4. For the first several hours you will need to rehydrate the little one. Make a solution of 1 cup warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. Stir well and with a eye dropper give it only a little of the solution every 15 minutes for about 2 hours.
Be very careful that it does drink to fast or to much as it will aspirate and die. This is for babies and orphans.

5- 8 IS ONLY FOR ORPHANS

5. After the baby is warm, hydrate and wiggling around you will need to have KMR or Esbilac both can be purchased from Petsmart or Petco. Make it up according to directions. It should be warm when fed and fresh at each feeding so make up very little.

6. We use special syringes but you can use an eye dropper or medicine dropper. Do NOT use the animal baby bottles.

7. Feed the baby every two hours from 6am to 9pm. Then it should sleep through the night. IMPORTANT...Before and After each feeding you must potty the baby. that means stimulating it to go to the bathroom. Mothers do this all the time but most people think they are only cleaning it. You must take warm, wet wash rag or paper towel and GENTLY rub their genitals.

8. We will get back with you. We are NOT state or Federally funded and operate on the loving volunteers and donations. Please remember that I am a Nurse and work full time and the volunteers are caring for the animals we have now while I am at work. I make calls early in the morning or late in the evening, so be patient and enjoy the animal the short time you have it. If we all do alittle we can do so much more.

Thank you all for being Hoo Angles and helping all Gods Creatures.
