YES IT IS SPRING It is baby season for all even though there is snow on the ground. I am guessing by now you have eithered called us for help or you have brought things to us before and are looking for further assistance before we get back with you. Baby birds are particularly sensitive and panicking and calling all around will not help your cause. FIRST: If you have decided the baby bird is really an orphan do NOT leave it on the ground. Many things can get to it and mother is not nor able to get it back in the nest. SECOND: GET THE BABY WARM. EITHER BY PUTTING IT IN A BASKET OR SMALL BOX WITH KLEENEX AND PUTTING IT ON A HEATING PAD. Put the basket only on half so the baby can move from side to side and self regulate. When the baby is warm to touch or starts to make noise youhave been successful. UNTIL THEN GIVE NOTHING BY MOUTH. AFTER THIS: If you think you know where the tree is that the baby fell out of, take a small basket put some kleenex in it and nail it to the tree and WATCH FROM A DISTANCE. a mother will feed more than one nest if the baby cries. If you do not know where the next is you now go on to plan B: Now that the baby is warm and without myself knowing the type of bird you have (unless of course you know) you have give it a sugar solution. 1/2 cup warm water: 1 tablespoon sugar and a PINCH of salt. After stirring to make sure it is dissolved you may give the baby drops DROPS only on the beak. you do not want any of this solution to go into the lungs. I would like at this time to compliment you. NO ONE DOES THIS ALONE... You are the first Guardian Angel this animal has met and you are doing a job. Please remember I am a nurse and return all the animal calls, as all the volunteers are busy caring for the animals and birds.
There is a great need for "Hoo"
but we can only handle the amount of animals and
birds we are staffed appropriately for. The care and feeding of the animals and
birds we have received at this moment come first. We will
help you it just will take time.
If you would like to make a difference and volunteer please
feel free to call 1-815-629-2212 or email us.
In the mean time thank you for your patience and being a "Hoo"
Angel and helping the mammals and birds.
